About a year ago, I received a lovely package from my sister. Included in the package contents was a book entitled, The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Schinn by Florence Scovel Shinn. According to the book’s description, The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn is a volume of four works by the legendary author and inspirational speaker, Shinn.
I was very excited when I found this book in the package of other things sent by my sister. I couldn’t wait to read the text, as my sister had advised me about the effect it had on her perspective of life. I made a promise to myself that I would begin reading the book right after work. Little did I know this was going to be quite a transforming experience indeed!
I started reading the book as soon as I reached home. I was a little disappointed when I came across the words “Jesus Christ,” mainly because of all the baggage that comes with the term. Yet, I remained open-minded and kept reading. What drew me into the read further was her comparison of Jesus with the subconscious mind. This helped me understand many of the concepts presented by Shinn.
The information in the book is very profound and inspiring, regardless of one’s spiritual path. The four books, The Game of Life, The Power of the Spoken Word, Your Word Is Your Wand, and The Secret of Success, express some of the deepest wisdom that I have ever read. Not only is the information found in this literary classic unique, but the overall work is quite a gem, as it explains how to cultivate the subconscious mind. This process surpasses dogma and many books on related subjects. I reading some mystical self-help books that were filled with beautiful ideas, but no mention is made how such understandings can be obtained. This is not the case with Shinn’s work. She provides an abundance of practical exercises that can aid us in our work of Being. One of my favorite passages from this collection reads as follows:
“Every man on this planet is taking his initiation in love. “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another.” …..Real love is selfless and free from fear. It pours itself out upon the object of its affection, without demanding any return.”
The Wisdom of Florence Scovel Shinn reveals a rare metaphysical treaty that is often overlooked and misunderstood by mystics, occultists, and spiritualists alike. The information contained in this volume is essential in understanding the process of the soul.
